Preparing the casting bed

Works in the casting bed area adjacent to Waterlily Drive continue as concrete foundations and pedestals are poured and crane pads are constructed. Concrete pours for the casting bed will continue through July as they prepare to cast the large bridge segments that will start launching across the estuary in early September.

Where possible, they will carry out the majority of work during normal working hours. However, some concrete pours will need to start in the early hours of the morning, even earlier during the summer months, so that the finished concrete complies with structural conformance requirements. Advance notice will always be given to nearby residents for any out-of-hours work.

Supporting the bridge

They will soon be building piers and columns to support the bridge superstructure. The team will also be working on the formwork, reinforcement, and pouring the concrete elements. This work is mostly performed in the estuary, as materials are fed to the reclamation pads' teams using cranes and forklifts.

Waterside Drive Boat Ramp access

They will need to close part of the Waterside Drive Boat Ramp carpark for two separate days towards the end of August /early September. Space is required to set up and disassemble vessels and equipment to install piles for the fishing platform north of the existing bridge. They’ll use a barge-mounted crane to lift and move the equipment from the ramp to the water or onto the barge decks.

Land and marine-based piling

Land-based piling will continue into July, along with piles for the fishing platform extending from the eastern foreshore out to the estuary. A land-based piling rig will drive these from the reclamation pads.

Marine piling gets underway around mid-August on the five marine piers. Each marine pier consists of six large steel tube piles that are driven, using a barge-mounted crane, into the estuary bed to depths of up to 38m. Marine piling will also be used for the new fishing platform with that barge located near the eastern foreshore.

Wildlife and heritage monitoring

Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) will be able to monitor dolphin activity and, where necessary, follow the appropriate controls to ensure all dolphins and other marine wildlife are not impacted during these activities. Heritage monitors are also engaged for any disturbance works in specific heritage sites, including areas in the estuary.

During all piling works, residents living close to the project and the surrounding area may expect loud noise and vibrations, which are common with these works; this will be intermittently ongoing until mid-November 2024. The project team will minimise the impacts of noise and vibration as much as possible and manage the work program with careful planning,

Limestone retaining walls

Limestone retaining walls adjacent to Seahawk Drive and Waterside Drive and those adjacent to Leisure Way will be constructed in July. Nearby residents are reminded that as part of the construction process, it is necessary to lower the groundwater level to facilitate the construction of the walls. Water will be extracted from the ground and pumped into nearby limestone-holding basins. Sometimes this water can react with the air, have a brown colour in appearance, and a light odour.

What can I expect this month?

  • Noise and vibrations from piling activities

  • Active plant, vehicles and machinery moving in and around all sections of the project site

Waterside Drive

  • Storage of embankment material (sand) for post-construction of limestone retaining walls

  • Dust suppression applications to reduce the impact of dust on neighbouring residents

Waterlily Drive

  • Piling works

  • Vibrations and noise from the ongoing establishment and operation of the casting bed

  • Noise from concrete trucks, pumps and the crawler crane operations

  • Vibration and noise from the commencement of the substructure construction

  • Temporary site car park in operation

  • Increased delivery traffic on local roads

Seahawk Drive

  • Works commencing on the limestone retaining walls, including minor clearing

Leisure Way/Egret Point Road area

  • Works commencing on the limestone retaining walls

  • Clearing works and minor footpath diversions to create future drainage basins

In the estuary

  • Construction of the substructure (piers and columns)

  • Piling works for the fishing platform

Other service works

Western Power continues working in the project area along Waterside Drive and Egret Point Road. It also investigates existing lighting issues along Mandurah Road and footpaths. These works are unrelated to the project and will likely continue during July.
